| Epichlorohydrin
(ECH) - Champion of the future |
| |
|
TPL
brought about investment in 10,000
MPTA Epichlorohydrin (ECH) Plant in
the year 1995 realizing the vitality
of ECH in epoxy resin polymers. The
technology for manufacture of ECH
was obtained from M/s. Conser S.p.a
Italy. ECH is a key input used in
Epoxy Resins for anti-corrosive surface
coating in Chemical Plants, Infrastructure,
Telecommunication, Construction, Electronics,
etc.
ECH
also finds focussed applications in
the manufacture of drugs prescribed
for Cardio Vascular treatments and
as a stabilizer in Pesticides for
increasing the shelf life.

The
Potential of ECH in anti-corrosive surface
applications, pharma and pesticides has
been of significant importance to TPL with
plans of long term business development.
The emerging trend in Consumer and Information
Electronics for usage of latest generation
Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are the drivers
of demand acceleration of Epoxy Resins and
ECH.

Chlor Alkali Unit:
|
| |
|
TPL
acquired the Heavy Chemicals divisions of
SPIC in the year 2000 with the primary objective
of consolidating ECH business, which requires
chlorine as the main raw material. The Chlor
Alkali unit has a capacity of 66,000 MTPA
out of which 49,500 MTPA constitutes membrane
cell process and the balance Mercury cell
process. The 150 TPD membrane plant was
commissioned during 1996 with know how from
M/s Chlorine Engineers Corporation, Japan.
Subsequently the Caustic evaporation and
Shellmax boiler were commissioned during
1998. The Mercury cell plant has been shutdown
since May 1998 as part of the environmental
concerns and only the membrane cell unit
has been in operation. A 50 TPD Caustic
Fusion plant was commissioned in the year
1979 (part of erstwhile Kothari Chemicals)
with 48% Caustic Soda Lye as feed with technology
supplied by M/s Bertrams, Switzerland. The
capacity of the unit was further enhanced
to 80 TPD during 1994. The unit also has
a capacity to produce 21,500 MTPA of Ammonium
Chloride 49,500 MTPA of Hydrochloric acid
and 3,300 MTPA of Sodium Hypo Chlorite.

Caustic
Soda finds extensive application in
the Paper, Aluminium and in various
other industries for general purpose.
The main clients for the product include
National Aluminium Company (NALCO),
etc., The Chlorine is mainly consumed
by TPL's ECH plant and the Propylene
Oxide/Polyols plant of M/s Manali
Petrochemicals Ltd.
The Ammonium Chloride produced is
considered to be of high quality and
is supplied to the dry cell battery
manufacturers.
